THE END OF THE WORLD OR THE BUTTERFLY?

Waking up this morning, I found myself going over the list of “things to do” that I knew I would see  in my Franklin Day Planner (yes, I still use paper).  Then I welcomed this thought–Actually I have only one assignment today, and a very exciting one–LIVE THIS DAY AS AN IMAGINAL CELL.

To quote Richard Bach, “What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly.”  I believe the caterpillar of society has moved into the chrysalis.  Let’s take a look:

When the caterpillar is preparing to transform, it gorges itself, growing fatter and fatter.  Check!–our over-consumption has been stupendous.

When the caterpillar enters the chrysalis it experiences a breakdown.  Check!–the collapse of so many of our systems is the focus of every news report.

When the caterpillar has liquified, special cells–called by biologists “imaginal cells,” which have entirely different DNA–seem to come out of nowhere and begin an amazing process.  Check!–new thinkers are appearing globally, in places of power and hidden in the grass roots.

When the old dying cells see these new cells appearing, they interpret them as invaders and attempt to kill them.  Check!  In Afghanistan–what, girls go to school?–we have to burn their classroom!  And in America–what, gay people be given rights and respect?–not on my watch!

But the imaginal cells keep bursting into being.  They cluster, communicate, coordinate the activity that will create the adult butterfly.  Check!–conversations, conferences, the Internet, cell phones, an undreamed of network is now in place.

So that’s why I gave myself one assignment this morning: Today Be An Imaginal Cell.  Hold the vision of the Transformed Society I want to see.  It’s mostly a state of Being–to know beyond question that the pain and the uncertainty we experience are moving us in a correct and wonderful direction.

As for the Doing–in holographic fashion the whole is in the part and so every act of the Cell that is me affects the Body emerging.  The candles lit beside my computer sent a spark of light with every email.  The blessing of the world at the top of my hills sent out vibrations to everyone I love and everyone I fail to love.  The carrot-apple-celery juice sent life through both me and the body global.  The piano practicing (mostly for my brain cells) rippled here and there a bit of amateur joy.  The phone call to one grieving friend lifted layers and layers of community sorrow.  And, of course, the dark chocolate indulged in from time to time showered antioxidants everywhere, and the emerging butterfly needs all the antioxidants it can get.

Perhaps the only action that needs be taken by an Imaginal Cell is to hold a vision that invites everyone to the table, to “unkind” no one, to realize that we are all the same “kind” and to treat everyone accordingly.

And then this evening came a surprise blessing.  Those in my network who don’t speak synchronicity really ought to read Embracing Coincidence.  Here’s the “synchronicity” that happened today:

This morning I read in an email from a friend that when she was baptized at eight, she knew that girls often received gifts for the occasion, such as “a necklace with a tiny mustard seed encased in glass to remind you of Jesus’ teachings that having faith the size of a mustard seed could move mountains.”  Reading that, I thought, hmmm, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen an actual mustard seed, but I do know I’ve never moved a mountain.  Later in the day I gave the kitchen pantry some serious attention, assimilating the food items a friend who had stayed with me had left behind.  Suddenly in my hand–what’s this little packet? “Mustard Seeds”!  Hundreds of tiny mustard seeds!  And yes, I’ve never moved a physical mountain, but I have moved some within myself.  Ah, how many mountains can I move with Hundreds of Mustard Seeds!

And how many can you move with my mustard seeds, because in truth you and I are One.
